From Amsterdam to Basel

 

A voyage up "Old Father Rhine", probably Europe's most important waterway, from Amsterdam at the North Sea to Basel - gateway to the Swiss Alps.

We travel through four of Europe's most important countries (Holland, Germany, France and Switzerland), see incomparable cities (Amsterdam, Cologne, Strasbourg, and Basle), and enjoy diverse landscapes such as the cruise across Holland's Ijsselmeer and along the Loreley stretch of the Rhine with its wealth of mythological associations.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY AMSTERDAM TO BASEL

 

DAY 1 NETHERLANDS: AMSTERDAM

?This afternoon, embark the vessel and get settled into your cabin. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Cocktail, followed by a specially prepared Welcome Dinner.

DAY 2 AMSTERDAM - HOORN

Begin your day with a relaxing cruise through a myriad of landscapes along the Rhine river.
For more active pursuits, spend the morning exploring the canal city of Amsterdam and the surrounding countryside, rejoining the vessel in the town of Hoorn. This evening join your fellow travelers for dinner.

DAY 3 GERMANY: COLOGNE

After lunch, view our arrival into the beautiful city of Cologne. Every year visitors from all over the world are drawn to the historical city and its 2000-year history.
Explore the historic Old Town, visit the famous twin-spired Cologne Cathedral, or perhaps sample some of the famous Kolsch beer brewed in Cologne.
There are many medieval houses, bridges, and gates that will delight the historian in you, while the more modern skyscrapers that tower overhead are sure to impress. After an exciting day, we return to the vessel and make our way south.

DAY 4 COCHEM

Today our Amadeus vessel takes a special trip down the romantic Moselle river, the largest tributary of the Rhine, and anchors at the old town of Cochem. The scenery in the Moselle Valley has been dominated by vineyards for millennia. Cochem itself has narrow streets, twisting alleys and medieval town gates, churches and walls. Discover the beauty of Cochem and perhaps sample some of the Riesling wines produced in this region. This evening we set off towards Koblenz.

DAY 5 KOBLENZ - RUDESHEIM

This morning arrive in Koblenz, ideally situated at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle rivers. The Romans, the Franks, the Holy Roman Empire, the French, and the Germans have all had a hand in this strategic city’s 2000 year history. St. Castor Basilica, the Church of our Beloved Lady, and the Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm’s memorial at the German Corner, are just a few of the sites which reflect the history of the area. This afternoon, spend time on deck as we cruise the most beautiful section of the river - the legendary Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Late this afternoon, the vessel arrives in Rudesheim, a winemaking town in the Rhine Gorge. Discover the region’s rich history of winemaking - perhaps visit the local museum - a great place to start. Back onboard your crew awaits with a delicious dinner.

DAY 6 MANNHEIM - SPEYER

After breakfast, explore the bustling metropolis of Mannheim. This unique city has many sights to see including the University of Mannheim, the National Theater Mannheim, and St. Sebastian’s Church. It is also home to Luisenpark, one of the most beautiful parks in all of Germany. Nearby Heidelberg is another old university city which is also a worthwhile visit. This afternoon’s call is at Speyer, a city known for its Cathedral where eight Roman Emperors and German Kings are interred. The Old Town Gate, Memorial Church, and Transportation Museum are all highlights of this beautiful city.
Tonight, enjoy the Captain’s Gala Dinner after your exciting day.

DAY 7 FRANCE: STRASBOURG

This morning we arrive in the dynamic capital of Alsace. This beautiful city’s sights include the famous cathedral Stra?burger M?nster and the Petite France quarter, a former mill and tanner district that still maintains its medieval charm. Half-timbered houses, the Ponts Couverts, the Palais de Rohan, the Council of Europe are among the wonders that Strasbourg holds in store for you. The Grand Island, the city center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is connected to the rest of the city by 22 stone bridges.
After lunch onboard, take in the views of the romantic Rhine as we move towards Switzerland, our final destination.

DAY 8 SWITZERLAND: BASEL

After breakfast, we bid you farewell. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

 

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY BASEL TO AMSTERDAM

 

Day 1: Basel

Arrive in Basel and check in from 4pm this afternoon. Enjoy a welcome cocktail as you settle into your cabin and explore the range of amenities on board. This evening the captain invites you to join the Welcome Dinner on board.

Day 2: Strasbourg

The ship arrives into France today. This morning you may wish to join an optional tour of the fascinating city of Strasbourg. In the afternoon there is an optional tour of the Alsace wine region, complete with the chance to sample some of the fine local wines.

Day 3: Speyer - Mannheim

You will wake in the German river city walk of Speyer this morning and here you may choose to join an optional city walk of the historic centre. Continue your cruise towards Mannheim in the afternoon, where you can explore the city at leisure or take an optional excursion to the ancient university city of Heidelberg, returning to the ship in time for dinner.

Day 4: Rudesheim - Koblenz

Arrive in Rudesheim early today. Here you can take an optional tour of the city, incorporating a visit to Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum. Return to the ship and take a leisurely cruise towards your next stop of Koblenz, situated at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle. There is a chance to join a walking tour of the city before heading back to the ship for dinner.

Day 5: Cochem

Arrive into the pretty German wine-producing town of Cochem early this morning. Here you may choose to join the organised walk around the town, including a wine tasting. Alternatively, spend some free time exploring on your own. The ship departs from here late afternoon, continuing north along the Rhine.

Day 6: Cologne

This morning you will arrive in historic Cologne, where you can join an optional walking tour, taking in the magnificent gothic cathedral and the numerous museums and galleries. Leave Cologne at lunchtime and continue towards your next stop of Vollendam. This evening the Captain requests your company at the Gala Dinner with a show performed by the crew.

Day 7: Hoorn - Amsterdam

Sail into Holland and arrive in Hoorn this morning. Today's optional tour takes you around the "Holland Waterland" before continuing to Amsterdam for a city tour and canal cruise. Later this evening you may enjoy some free time in the city as she remains moored in Amsterdam overnight.

Day 8: Amsterdam

Disembark in Amsterdam this morning after enjoying your final breakfast on board.
